Channel 8 News: Green Tea Health Benefits & America Oprah Winfrey's Weight Loss Secret!

Oprah Winfrey's Green Tea Diet
As with so many sky-rockets to fame, the Perricone Prescription -- more widely known as the green tea diet -- came to the world's attention on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Oprah's guest was Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of several books, including the Perricone Prescription that detailed the medical research behind the astonishing fat burning properties of green tea and green tea extract.

During his appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Perricone stated that substituting coffee with green tea could produce weight loss of 10 pounds in 6 weeks. Incredulous as it sounds, is it really possible to lose weight with green tea alone? According to Dr. Perricone (as well as numerous medical research studies), green tea and green tea extract contain phytonutrients that perform at least 3 functions in the body that promote weight loss.

Green tea regulates glucose and insulin levels. Sharp spikes of insulin signal the body to store fat. As Dr. Perricone puts it, "elevated insulin puts a lock on body fat." Coffee, on the other hand, contains an ingredient that raises blood sugar levels, which in turn, produces elevated levels of insulin. Green tea balances blood sugar itself, preventing the production of excess insulin. "If you do nothing else but substitute coffee with green tea, your insulin levels will drop and you will lose weight," says Dr. Perricone.

Green tea promotes metabolism. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a medical research study in which metabolism rates rose by 4% in a 24 hour period. A chemical in green tea lifts thermogenic activity in the body (a fancy term for the rate at which your body burns calories). This chemical also raises levels of oxidation of body fat (the burning of fat cells).

Green tea trims appetite. Fat loss of 21% of body weight was observed in laboratory mice in a University of Chicago study. The researchers concluded that the fat loss was due to significant loss of appetite and diminished food intake. While Dr. Perricone has not referred to appetite suppression as a benefit of green tea, a small handful of other studies have also asserted this theory.Green tea and green tea extract (the extract is simply a concentrated form of the effective ingredients in green tea) boast many other health benefits, which may not directly impact weight loss, but which are excellent tonics and health aids. Green tea has been found to trim cholesterol levels, lower hypertension, prevent certain cancers and preclude or reverse liver impairment.

The green tea diet has captured the hopes of dieters around the world. Dr. Perricone and Oprah unknowingly unleashed another fad diet waiting to happen. The internet has seen a meteoric rise in green tea weight loss products, similar in intensity to the acai berry diet sensation. Fad diets should be considered with caution, especially when expensive products boasting quick results are being offered. Fad diets can hurt the dieter not only because of their high cost and unfeasible promises, but also by being rough on the body. Rapid weight loss programs and crash diets are generally unstainable (the weight loss will eventually come back) and can put the body into any number of nutritional imbalances that can do the dieter far more damage than good.

Bottom line: Yes, go get some green tea or green tea extract. Drink or drop your green tea every day. It has relatively low levels of caffeine, so it is safe to drink (diluted) throughout the day.

Green Tea is unfermented tea which is minimally oxidized and hence green tea contains the highest level of health nutrients as compared to other types of teas. Many world-renowned universities and research institutions have conducted green tea-related scientific and medical research in order to prove its health benefits.

1.Green tea is a contributing factor for Japanese increased life expectancy—11 years of research by Japanese food scientists and researchers.

2.Green tea can contribute to weight loss and keep our body slim—Research by University of Chicago, USA.

3.Green Tea can help prevent hair loss and other lifestyle-related diseases—Research by Saitama Cancer Center Research Institute, Japan.

WHY NEWBRAND ORGANIC GREEN TEA? Today, we have witnessed a surge in sales of green tea beverage, most notably is the canned or bottled green tea, the sales of which could have exceeded 25 million cans/bottles in 2008, and Singaporeans are also familiar with green tea packed in a “tea-bag” and green tea powder. Let’s better understand and study different types of green tea in the market.

1.Canned or bottled green tea has been reported to contain very minimal green tea health elements like polyphenols and Vitamin E, The United States Department of Agriculture tested and released the results of a study they conducted. It stated that bottled or canned green tea had very low levels of polyphenols. Several universities as well as Consumer Reports also conducted similar testing. They all came to the same conclusions.

2.Without doubt, green tea stuffed in a tea-bag has made it easier and more convenient for tea drinkers, however, green tea leaves have to be processed into “splinter” shade to be packed into a tea bag, the process will inevitably induce oxidization and bring about the loss of beneficial ingredients in the leaves. Furthermore, tea bag will “disallow” drinkers to observe the freshness and quality of tea leaves, thus, it is a widely known fact in the tea industry that only tea leaves of lower grade (old tea leaves in big shape) are to be used for tea-bag packaging, and if you open up the tea-bag, you will discover that nearly 30% of the materials are dried tea stems and veins instead of pure green tea leaves, tea plants’ stems and veins contain very little nutrients. In addition, tea bag will affect the fragrance and taste of pure green tea.

3.Green tea powder was first made popular by Japanese tea manufacturers, due to the limited space available for tea farms in Japan, Japanese tea manufacturers have to fully utilize tea leaves of lower quality so as to increase production to meet the huge demand for green tea in the country, green tea powder is made of old tea leaves in shape, combined with discarded tea leaves, stems and veins to ground and crush them into powder form, the bigger and older the leaves, the lower level of health ingredients they contain, and manufacturers hardly use tea leaves of better quality to produce green tea powder and throughout the process of grinding and crushing, it will also inevitably induce oxidization and the loss of beneficial health elements in the leaves. Many green tea lovers may have misunderstood that powdered green tea is always a better option as the color is green and the taste stronger, unfortunately it is not true, and tea plants’ stems and veins contain very little nutrients.
